This guide explains what happens when you appeal a decision made by SkilledTradesBC. It shows each step, from sending your notice of appeal to receiving the Board’s decision. Information sheets at the end of this page give more detail on specific topics.
Part 1
Start your appeal
Send your notice of appeal. The Board writes back to you.
Part 2
Get ready for the hearing
Share documents, meet with the Board, set the hearing, and send in written materials.
Part 3
Hearing and decision
Present your case and receive the Board’s decision.
Words you will see

2
The Board writes to you
The Board will send you a letter. The letter confirms that the Board received your notice of appeal. It also gives you more information about the next steps.
Part 2: Get ready for the hearing
3
SkilledTradesBC sends its documents
SkilledTradesBC must send the Board and you a copy of all the documents it looked at when it made the decision you are appealing.

4
Appeal management conference
The Board holds a meeting with you and SkilledTradesBC. This meeting is called an appeal management conference. It helps both sides get ready for the hearing.
Information sheets
5
The Board schedules your hearing
The Board will tell you in writing when and how your hearing will happen. A hearing can be in writing or spoken (oral).
If your hearing is spoken (oral), the Board usually holds it either in the area where you live or online. If going to an in-person hearing would cause you serious difficulty, you can ask the Board to hold it online instead.
6
Send in written materials before the hearing
To help both sides get ready, the Board usually asks you and SkilledTradesBC to send in:
- An outline of the arguments you both plan to make at the hearing.
- Copies of any other documents you both plan to use as evidence.
- Information about any witnesses you both plan to bring to the hearing.

Part 3: Hearing and decision
7
The hearing
At the hearing, you and SkilledTradesBC both tell your story and give evidence. You can give the Board documents that are important to the appeal and call witnesses to help explain what happened.
Most hearings are open to the public. You can also bring other people with you. They can be witnesses, help explain information, or simply support you.

8
You receive the decision
The Board usually sends a written decision after the hearing, not on the same day. You and SkilledTradesBC each get a copy.
The Board also posts its decisions on this website and on CanLII. See Decisions.
9
After the decision
The Board’s decision is final.
If you want to challenge it, you must ask the Supreme Court of British Columbia to review it. This is called a judicial review. You must apply to the court within 60 days after the Board issues its decision.
A lawyer can tell you how to apply for a judicial review.
